International relations theories

International relations theories can be divided into two epistemological approaches: “positivist” and “post-positivist”. These theories usually focus on the characteristics of international relations such as government interactions, size of military forces, balance of power, etc. Post-positivist epistemology rejects the idea that the social world can be studied using an objective and value-free method. Post-positivist theories reject the main ideas of neorealism and liberalism such as rational choice theory. On the basis that the scientific method cannot be used in the social world and the science of international relations in its positivist sense is impossible.
